Frequently asked questions.

FAQs

  • Therapists create and hold space for clients to explore and process emotions and experiences, encouraging them to arrive at their own conclusions.

Question a Therapist might ask: “How does talking about this past event make you feel? Where does the emotion show up in your body? What needs to be expressed here? How can we use music or others forms of creativity to help you express this?”

Coaching is a solutions-oriented approach that helps you navigate practical challenges and meet your goals. Coaches often offer advice and help create action plans.

Question a Coach might ask: “What’s a specific goal you have this week to decrease your anxiety? How will you hold yourself accountable?”

I choose to offer both music therapy and coaching to meet the diverse needs of my clients. Some people are specifically looking for music therapy, while others are more comfortable with coaching. You can expect to receive the best version of me in both therapy and coaching contexts. Many people like the idea of working with a coach who is also a board certified music therapist.

  • Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music Therapy is an interactive process that uses music as a primary tool for therapeutic change. Research shows that music therapy can reduce anxiety and depression, improve mood, increase self-expression, improve chronic pain management, reduce both acute and chronic pain, and improve health-related quality of life. At Feel, you will work directly with a Board-Certified Music Therapist with a Masters degree in Music Therapy, advanced training in Neurologic Music Therapy, and 10 years of clinical experience in mental health.

  • Music therapy is NOT traditional psychotherapy. If you are searching for traditional talk therapy or someone who can provide mental health assessment and diagnosis, I recommend you also work with a licensed talk therapist. Music therapy is often supplemental to other more traditional forms of therapy. Music therapy offers an opportunity for you to engage in expressive, creative, and exploratory processes that can support your mental health, but it is not an appropriate substitute for psychotherapy.

  • No. Also, I don’t believe that some people are “good” at music while others are “bad.” We all have an innate sense of creativity, and music is one of the universal ways we can connect with and express ourselves. Whether you are a musical prodigy or someone who has never touched a musical instrument or sang a song in your life, I will meet you where you are. In Music Therapy, it’s all about the process, not the product.

  • Contact me. We can start with a free 20-minute phone or Zoom consultation to decide together if music therapy is right for you. Then, we will schedule an initial evaluation.

We can meet in-person in the San Francisco Bay Area or virtually anywhere in the nation. During this first session, we will start to get to know one another. I want to hear your story. What led you here? What have you already tried? What’s working well in your life? What isn’t working well in your life? We will work together to create your goals for music therapy.

I’ll give you recommendations to begin incorporating more creativity, mindfulness, meditation, and nature into your daily life.

  • Yes! I offer Wellness Coaching specifically for this purpose.

Therapy/coaching is an investment in yourself.

Please note: if you live within 25 miles of Novato, CA and wish to work together in your home or office, an additional flat travel fee of $50/session will apply for home visits. Otherwise, we can work together in person in Novato or virtually through telehealth.

  • I work with adults who are looking to support and/or improve their physical and mental health in a holistic way.

If you’re open to using creativity (especially music) and other holistic modalities—like mindfulness or meditation—to help you feel better, you’ve come to the right place.

Please note: If you are looking for music therapy for your young child, I am happy to refer you to local music therapists who work with kids. But as the Bob Dylan song goes, “It ain’t me, babe. It ain’t me.” Please feel free to reach out to me, and I’ll point you in the right direction.

  • I love kids, but I work exclusively with adults. If you are looking for music therapy for your young child, I am happy to refer you to local music therapists who work with kids. Feel free to reach out to me.

  • Most clients find that weekly sessions support them best. If you have engaged in any type of therapy before, you probably know that it’s important to do your own work in between sessions. This is particularly important when we are working together. Real change is a commitment and a process. I am here to guide and support you, but the big change happens in between sessions when you commit to integrating what we discuss in music therapy.

My goal for music therapy is to help you uncover the version of yourself who suffers the least and feels the best. As such, I will see you as a client until you feel you have achieved your goals. This could happen in a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years. Each person has a unique journey.

  • Good question!

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions within a therapeutic relationship to achieve health and wellness goals. For example, a Music Therapist may lead you in music improvisation (playing instruments) with a goal to encourage expression and processing of difficult emotions. Unlike in music education, the goal is not to learn to play an instrument (though you may do that, too!). In Music Therapy, the goal is to use music as a primary tool of therapy to achieve non-musical goals. You don’t need any music experience to participate.

Board-Certified Music Therapists are the only professionals who can legally provide Music Therapy in the state of California. Credentialed Music Therapists have degrees in Music Therapy, have completed a minimum 1,200 hours of clinical training and a 6-month supervised internship, and have successfully passed a National Board Certification Exam to earn the credential MT-BC. When you choose Feel, you will be working with an experienced, credentialed, Master’s level Music Therapist with advanced training in Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT), as well as additional training in sound healing, mindfulness, and meditation. MT-BCs must adhere to the Music Therapists’ Standards of Clinical Practice, Code of Ethics, and Professional Competencies. This protects you and your therapist.

Sound Healing is the therapeutic and transformational use of sound and music. There is no formal training legally required to self-identify as a sound healer. The intent of sound healing is to facilitate and direct specific sounds and their resulting vibrations to the body to impact well-being. Sound healing is a more receptive process, while Music Therapy is a more active process.

When you work with Feel, you get the benefit of working with a credentialed Music Therapist who can incorporate elements of sound healing into your sessions, depending on your needs. While our expertise is Music Therapy, we have personally found many sound healing interventions to be effective when used as supplemental techniques. One of our favorites is conscious humming.

Listening to music yourself is an excellent way to relax (and we highly encourage it!), but research shows that engaging in Music Therapy—such as active music-making—is an evidence-based way to improve health-related quality of life.

  • I require at least 24 hours advance notice from clients to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Unless you miss your appointment due to circumstances that we both agree was an emergency, cancellations made without a 24-hour notice are charged 100% of the session fee. If you will be late for your session, I ask that you please notify me immediately by phone or text.

Remember, this time is for you. The only way we start to heal is by showing up consistently and doing the work. When you commit to an appointment slot, that time is reserved for you. If you cancel less than 24 hours in advance or no-show for your appointment, I’m not able to offer that slot to another client who is in need of help. Please extend the same courtesy to others as you would want extended to you.

  • No. I operate exclusively as a self-pay model. Services are not covered by insurance. Payment is due in full at time of service. I accept cash, Venmo, or Zelle. I do not carry account balances.

Access to quality music therapy should not be dependent upon your ability to pay. Unfortunately, music therapy is not yet a covered service in the state of California. In addition, we all know that Marin County and the San Francisco Bay Area are two of the most expensive places to live in America. As such, I have a sliding scale available for a small number of clients who cannot afford the set rate but who want to work with me. Contact me to see if you qualify.
